There are five recognized different types of German Shepherds.

They all belong to the same breed but distinction helps the breeders to choose the right and suitable dogs for different roles and services.

●       American show lines.
These are also known AKC lines. These dogs perform shows and events. They are evaluated on the basis of their movement size color and overall appearance. They are generally taller than European lines. they can be in a variety of colors such as Black and tan saddle, solid black, sable, bicolor, and solid white. American show line German Shepherd is lightly pigmented. Cream light tan and silver are common in them. They possess a lower drive and less energy. These are commonly made pets. They are active but have low strength.

●       West German show lines
They are impressive in appearance. West German show line also known for a handsome appearance. They are not just handsome but also strong and active. Each dog of best German show line is entitled as a protection dog. There is a Health clearance for hips and elbows before passing of genes. They are great as both protectors and family pets. These are super active. They need to exercise training and are very friendly.

●       West German working lines
These are in the closest relation with German Shepherd dogs developed by Max Von Stephanitz. He was the one who set the Breed standard guideline. West German working lines have the focus high and strong drives with excellent working ability and stable temperament. Apart from the strong drive and ability to work, these are also bred for their handsome appearance. They are calm and in perfect colors. The working lines west German are more sloped than East German. But still, they are energetic and active. These German Shepherds are excellent in sports and jobs of search and rescue. They are well matured with a strong drive.

●       East German DDR working lines
These are generally bred for military purposes. They are of extremely hi and strict breed standards. They possess strong bones large head and broad Shoulders. The dogs with both didi and easy German working line parents are allowed to breed. The dogs completely free from hip dysplasia are allowed to breed. This line undergoes a physical test:

○       Scaling a straight wall of 1.5 and 1.8 meters

○       Walking on a balance beam

○       Searching 10 blinds

○       Completing a series of cracking test

These are bred to handle terrible weather conditions and long working days. They are generally used for the territory border Patroling tracking and attack dogs. These are more defensive and have long-lasting endurance and athleticism.

●       Czech working lines
These are originated from communist Czechoslovakia. They are mainly bread for the patrolling purpose. Is known for their working drive, agility, and intensity of working. They are very powerful and dark pigmented. These drugs are bred for protection jobs obedience stringent and high agility work.
