The History of the German Shepherd
The German shepherd dates back to 1899 and was developed by
the man of curiosity: Captain Max von Stephanitz. He is a German who aimed to
create a breed of intelligent, brave, powerful, and adaptive dog. he blended a
variety of shepherd dogs. After retiring from the military, he began towards
his passion. he studied breeding techniques. he observed many breeds of
gorgeous flock dogs, dogs with high activity, intelligent, brave and capable.
But later He was struck with the thought that there was not a single dog with
all quality. One day, he visited a dog show where a wolf-looking dog grabbed
his attention. he took him home and named as Hektor Linksrhein and later
changed to Horand v Grafeth. After the Horand was seen with a great physique,
and intelligence Stephanitz formed a company- the Verein fur Deutsche
schäferhunde, for descendants of Horand. he already knew that the future of
dogs was in military and police. so, he contacted the government generally to
use his breed. during the first world war, German shepherd served as a red
cross dog, carrier and rescuer. The bravery of the dog was noticed and many
dogs returned home.
5-day old puppy turn from kennel riddled with bombs in
France by an American corporal from Los Angeles. The corporal brought the puppy
trained and later called as Rin Tin Tin and participated in 26 films. Although
allies were impressed with German Shepherds the German root of dogs made them
doubtful. Later the name was changed to shepherd dog by American Kennel Club.
In England the name kept is alsatian wolfdog. Von Stephanitz was closely
involved in the development of The Breed. Around 1922 he noticed some traits
which made him concerned. The traits such as bad temper and tendency to tooth
decay appeared in them. He took a quality control system. Before any German Shepherd was developed, he needed to pass the test for his good health,
athleticism temperament and intelligence.
On the other hand, Americans have bred the dogs to win dog shows emphasized on looks and gait of dogs. After the second world war, the German Shepherds started to fail performance test genetic diseases. This is when US police and military started to import German Shepherds working dogs. In recent decades started to focus on quality and ability of breed rather than appearance.
